Local SEO for attorneys: how to rank in your city
When someone searches "personal injury lawyer near me" or "divorce attorney in [your city]," Google shows three results on a map before it shows a single ordinary link. That block, the map pack, is where local legal clients actually click. Winning it is the highest-leverage marketing most small firms never do properly.
Start with your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (the old "Google My Business") is what feeds the map pack. Claim it, verify it, and fill in everything: exact practice areas, hours, service areas, a real photo of the office and the attorney, and a description written for humans. An incomplete profile simply loses to a complete one.
Get your name, address, and phone consistent
Google trusts a firm it can verify. Your name, address, and phone number (NAP) must match exactly everywhere they appear: your website, your Business Profile, Avvo, Justia, the state bar directory, and local listings. Even small mismatches ("Suite 200" vs "Ste. 200") erode trust. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
Build real location and practice-area pages
A single "Services" page can't rank for every practice area in every neighborhood. Give each major practice area its own page, and if you serve distinct areas, create genuine pages for them, not thin doorway copies. A page titled "Car Accident Lawyer in [City]" with local specifics will outrank a generic services list every time.
Google rewards specificity. "Estate planning attorney in Austin" beats "we do estate planning" in every measurable way.
Earn reviews, steadily
Review count, quality, and recency are among the strongest local ranking factors, and they're the first thing a prospect reads. Build a simple, ethical habit of asking satisfied clients for an honest Google review at the natural end of a matter. A steady trickle beats a burst; ten reviews a year, every year, compounds. Reply to each one professionally, and mindful of confidentiality.
Add local signals to your site
- Title tags and headings that name your city and practice area.
- LocalBusiness structured data so search engines can read your firm's details cleanly.
- An embedded map and full address in the footer of every page.
- Content that mentions the courts, counties, and communities you actually serve.
Don't skip the technical basics
None of the above outranks a site that's slow, broken on mobile, or invisible to crawlers. Make sure the site loads fast, works on a phone, has a clean title and description on every page, and submits a sitemap in Google Search Console. Local SEO sits on top of a healthy site. It can't rescue a broken one.
How long does it take?
Local SEO is a compounding asset, not a switch. Profile and citation fixes can move things in weeks; content and reviews build over months. The firms that win are simply the ones that start and stay consistent while competitors keep meaning to get around to it.
